About the Centre

The National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training is a Co-Funded Centre of Excellence of the Australian Research Council and the National Water Commission.

The Centre was established in June 2009, with Commonwealth funding of $29.5M over five years.

Subsequent to the award of this core funding, the Centre was awarded an additional $15M over four years to develop groundwater research infrastructure. as part of the Australian Government's Super Science (Marine and Climate) initiative, funded by the Education Infrastructure Fund and administered by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.

This substantial investment in groundwater by the Australian Government has created an unprecedented opportunity for groundwater researchers and the industry, making us the envy of the groundwater world.

Australian Research Council

The National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training is building Australia’s research capacity in groundwater studies, a field which is vital for Australia’s sustainability. The research and training undertaken by the Centre will improve our understanding of groundwater including its interaction with other natural systems and its importance to all Australians. It will also train the next generation of researchers and professionals in groundwater related fields, filling a significant gap in Australia’s current resource management capabilities. The ARC is working closely with the National Water Commission and the Centre to maximise the Australian Government’s investment in this important initiative

National Water Commission

The National Water Commission and the Australian Research Council initiated the establishment of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training to undertake the critical work needed to improve our understanding and management of Australia’s groundwater systems. Through its investment in the Centre, the Australian Government will ensure that our precious groundwater resources are used in a more sustainable way. The Centre will collaborate closely with State Governments, water managers, water users, other research groups and the private sector to ensure that its research and training activities are well designed to meet the future needs of both governments and industry
